A fatal car accident occurred just after midnight on Friday near Fairfield University’s exit, shutting down both sides of I-95 until approximately 7 a.m. this morning.

The crash took place between a Chevrolet Impala, BMW 300 and tractor trailer on the northbound side of I-95 near Exit 22.

The man driving the Impala spun out into the concrete barrier and was disabled in the center lane. The BMW 300 crashed into the Impala, ejecting the driver of the Impala onto the highway, according to state police.

A tractor trailer then hit the Impala and spun into the concrete barrier, ejecting that driver onto the highway as well, according to WFSB.

Both the tractor trailer driver and Impala driver were pronounced dead on scene, and the driver of the BMW was treated for minor injuries, according to WFSB.

Fairfield Police Department alerted town residents early in the morning that I-95 was closed in both directions between Exit 19 Northbound and Exit 23 Southbound due to a CT State Police Investigation.

Police diverted traffic off of the highway and onto local roadways including Post Road until the main interstate was reopened.

Fairfield students could hear the sirens from campus.

“I heard the sirens around 12:15 a.m. I had my window closed but there were so many for so long that it was hard not to notice it and think something bad was happening,” said Allie Emmanuel ‘24.
