On Wednesday, September 28, the university began the process of inaugurating its new arena, which has officially been named the Leo D. Mahoney Arena.

Those in attendance at the ceremony were given a preliminary tour of the unfinished arena.

Fairfield University Student Association President, Jordan Gale ‘23, stated that the “grand opening” of the arena will be November 18. Additionally, he stated that Red Sea Madness will be hosted on December 3, when the men’s basketball team makes their debut at the new arena.

“This is not just an arena for the Fairfield University campus. It is an arena for the whole of our broader community,” said President Mark R. Nemec, PhD. “It will be a beacon in which we can bring so many of this broader community to our home. God bless and go Stags!”

The new arena will provide a home to a Fairfield basketball program that has been without an on-campus arena since the demolition of Alumni Hall in the spring of 2021. The university volleyball program will also welcome the arena as its new home.

Vice President of Athletics, Paul Schlickmann, spoke at the event as well.

“I speak confidently for them [student-athletes and coaches] that they anticipate a game day atmosphere with an electric home court advantage that will provide a championship caliber experience for our student athletes.”
